La Maltroie is the fleshy side of Chassagne — the parcel sits on a gentle slope of deep, heavy clay, and that clay is what gives this bottling its power: generous, broad across the palate, with a rich texture and ripe fruit rather than steely nerve. It's the Chassagne for people who want white Burgundy with some shoulders on it. Brothers Vincent and Francois Jouard took over the family estate, which dates to 1820, in the early 1990s: Vincent farms the vines and tills regularly so he can skip herbicides, while Francois handles the cellar with a light touch and never more than one-third new barrels. Their standing rule across the domaine is that only fruit from vines at least 50 years old goes into the bottles — a serious commitment for an estate of just 11 hectares, and a big part of why these wines deliver more than their 1er Cru peers. Prime parcels, old vines, restrained oak: the quality here runs well ahead of what you'd expect.

More about Domaine Vincent & Francois Jouard

Domaine Vincent & Francois Jouard is a small estate – 11 hectares – but they only keep grapes for their wine production harvested from vines that are at least 50 years old. The brothers took over the family estate that dates to 1820 in the early 1990s. Their "recipe" for old school Chassagne is very straight forward. Vincent is in the vineyards and tills regularly in order to fastidiously avoid herbicides and other chemicals. In the cellar François uses a light touch and no more than 1/3 new barrels for elevage. The Jouard's are blessed with prime parcels and old vines, adding to the excellent value of their wines.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with tarragon, lobster or crab in butter, scallops with brown butter, veal blanquette, pork loin with apples, or a well-aged Comte.

Tasting Profile

Ripe orchard fruit — yellow apple, pear, a little citrus — with a touch of oak spice and pastry from barrel aging. Full-bodied and broad, with a rich, almost creamy texture, ripe rather than sharp acidity, and a long, mouth-filling finish. Dry.
