Old-vine Premier Cru Chassagne from a sixth-generation family that still hasn't figured out how to charge what the neighbors do. This is one of three Premier Cru whites the Jouards bottle from their own parcels, alongside La Maltroie and Les Chaumees Clos de la Truffiere. Vincent Jouard handles the vines, tilling constantly so he can avoid herbicides and other chemicals altogether; brother Francois handles the cellar with a deliberately light hand, which is why these wines taste like Chassagne rather than like oak. The brothers took over the family domaine — which goes back to before 1820 — in 1990, and today farm eleven hectares that include some of the oldest vines in the village. Whites account for 95% of what they make, and it shows: this is a house that has spent six generations thinking about Chardonnay on this one hillside. Prime parcels, old vines, honest prices — the combination is rarer in Chassagne than it should be.

More about Domaine Vincent & Francois Jouard

Domaine Vincent & Francois Jouard is a small estate – 11 hectares – but they only keep grapes for their wine production harvested from vines that are at least 50 years old. The brothers took over the family estate that dates to 1820 in the early 1990s. Their "recipe" for old school Chassagne is very straight forward. Vincent is in the vineyards and tills regularly in order to fastidiously avoid herbicides and other chemicals. In the cellar François uses a light touch and no more than 1/3 new barrels for elevage. The Jouard's are blessed with prime parcels and old vines, adding to the excellent value of their wines.
