Ettore Germano Alta Langa Extra Brut 2021

Labelled Extra Brut, but there's actually no dosage at all — after disgorgement the bottles are topped up with the same wine, no liqueur, nothing to round the edges. That takes confidence, and it's the same confidence a Serralunga Barolo house brings to everything it touches. The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grow up at Cigliè, roughly 500–570 metres above sea level on medium-textured limestone and Langa stones, just south of the hills that give us Barolo and Barbaresco but high enough that the appellation is literally named for the altitude (Alta Langa only became its own denomination in 2002). Fruit comes in by hand in small baskets and goes to the press as whole clusters, skins pulled off the must immediately; the Chardonnay ferments cool in 500-litre French tonneaux with the rest in steel, then the base rests on its lees with bâtonnage before a spring tirage and a minimum of 30 months in bottle. The result is a traditional-method sparkler with real Piedmontese address — precise and savory rather than fruity-sweet, and a fraction of what comparable grower-minded bubbles cost from more famous addresses.

Kerin O'Keefe

95 points

"Floral aromas of Spanish broom and spring blossom mingle with white stone fruit and citrus on the Ettore Germano 2021 Extra Brut. Showing a pristine finesse, the dry, racy palate features yellow apple, white peach, lemon drop and tangerine before a saline close. Bright acidity keeps it balanced while a refined, continuous perlage lends even more finesse. Drink through 2036." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Ettore Germano

One of the great things about Serralunga -- aside from its exceptional terroir -- is that it is still dominated, Burgundy-like, by small, traditionally-minded producers who each focus on their own individual vineyard holdings. Ettore Germano is one of our favorite examples. Their wines have all the intensity of great Serralunga and the soulfulness of traditionally-made Langhe wines, but also a warmth and friendliness that invites early drinking.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Veal tonnato, fritto misto, prosciutto and grissini, oysters and raw scallops, fried artichokes, or a plate of young Robiola with salted almonds.

Tasting Profile

Dry and quite crisp, with green apple, lemon peel and white pear over bread-dough and toasted-nut notes from the long lees aging. Medium-bodied, fine persistent bubbles, bright acidity, and a chalky, savory finish with no sweetness at all on the end.
