Aglianico from vines phylloxera never reached: Raffaele Guastaferro farms a parcel of ungrafted, own-rooted Aglianico in Taurasi that is close to two centuries old — among the oldest ungrafted vineyards anywhere — and propagates his newer plantings from cuttings of it. Memini, Latin for 'I remember,' is the wine that introduces that material: roughly 3,300 bottles a year off the Piano d'Angelo site at about 350 meters on volcanic soils, farmed organically with grass and wildflowers left between the rows. It ferments in stainless steel and rests six to eight months in large, used 25-hectoliter Slavonian oak botti, so there is no new-wood gloss on it, then spends further time in bottle before release. The family sold its fruit to co-ops for generations before bottling under its own name in the early 2000s, with enologist Fortunato Sebastiano advising in the cellar. At twelve years old this is in a lovely place — tannins softened, fruit still there. Stand it upright a day and decant.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Good full bright red-ruby. Enticing aromas and flavors of raspberry, red cherry and peppery herbs. Sweet and ripe in the mouth; pungent salinity keeps the wine fresh. Showcases lovely acid/tannin/extract balance and a juicy texture on the long, delightful finish. Lovely Aglianico." —Ian D'Agata

More about Guastaferro

Raffaele Guastaferro has about two hectares of ungrafted Aglianico vines that are pushing the two-century mark, and another five that are planted with a massal selection from those ancient vines. Bottles with the Guastaferro name on them have only been around since the 2003 vintage, but the family has been working these vines for over a hundred years. Prior to 2003, they sold all their fruit to cooperatives and to Mastroberardino. Raffaele convinced his father to convert to estate-bottling, and we all benefit from that decision.

Farming at the estate is organic, with grass and wildflowers between the rows on a mix of clay, limestone, and volcanic soils.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Lamb ragù over hand-cut pasta, braised beef cheeks, or grilled sausage with lentils. Aged pecorino and young caciocavallo also work.

Tasting Profile

Raspberry and red cherry over dried herbs, black pepper and a smoky volcanic edge. Medium-bodied, with high acidity, a saline snap, and tannins that age has worn down to fine dust. The finish is long and savory rather than sweet.
