A sixty-year-old Rioja from one of the region's legendary vintages, still in the bottle it was aged into. Martinez Lacuesta began in Haro in 1895 as an ageing house rather than a growing one — Eloy Martinez and his son Felix owned no vines at the start, and the whole business was built on maturing wine slowly and well. That's exactly the skill a bottle like this depends on: the Reserva Especial was the house's long-ageing flagship, given years in cask and more years in bottle before anyone was allowed near it. The cellar still racks by hand, gravity-decanting from barrel to barrel, a method adopted early and never abandoned. Wines of this age are what they are — variation between bottles is part of the deal — but the family is still in Haro, still in the same place, which is a rarer thing in Rioja than you'd think. Decant gently, off the sediment, and don't rush it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast lamb shoulder with garlic and rosemary, jamon iberico and aged Manchego, braised oxtail, or a simple plate of morcilla and piquillo peppers. Nothing too loud — mature Rioja wants gentle, savoury cooking.

Tasting Profile

A dry red at the mature end of the spectrum: expect dried red fruit, leather, tobacco and sweet spice rather than fresh berry. Light to medium-bodied and low in alcohol by modern standards, with tannins almost entirely resolved and bright acidity holding it together. The finish is savoury and drying. Serve cool, not cold, and stand the bottle upright a day ahead — there will be sediment.
