Timorasso was down to a handful of rows before Walter Massa set about rescuing it in the 1980s; today it is arguably Piedmont's great white grape, and this bottling comes from an unexpected quarter — the Oddero family of La Morra, Barolo growers who went east to make it. Monlià is their joint project with the La Morra restaurateurs behind Osteria More e Macine: a single east-facing hectare and a half at 450 meters, on fine calcareous clay shot through with limestone. Derthona is the Roman name for nearby Tortona and the word growers here use for their Timorasso. Fermentation is spontaneous in stainless steel, and the elevage is then split between steel and a large Austrian oak cask, with no malolactic and a long stretch on the lees, which is where the grape's waxy, almost Burgundian texture comes from. Delicious now for its verve, but Timorasso is one of the few Italian whites that genuinely improves over a decade, so buy two.

More about Oddero

Oddero is one of the oldest and most esteemed estates in all of Barolo. They were one of the first producers to start bottling their wine, instead of selling it off in bulk as was the custom until the 20th century. And when brothers Luigi and Giacomo took charge in the 1950s and ‘60s they helped modernize the winery and increased the quality and the vineyard holdings, without losing sight of the family’s 200 plus year old traditions.

So it’s a bit of a mystery why it took so long for them to catch on in the U.S. I think it's likely due to the fact that they have always sold a good percentage of their production in Italy itself. They have long standing relationships with many of the country’s best restaurants and are well represented on all the top wine lists and at the best wine bars. Whenever I travel there I’m sure to enjoy several bottles of perfectly aged Oddero Baroli.

But the days of obscurity stateside have largely ended now, thanks to the work of importers Doug Polaner in New York and Oliver McCrum in California.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Vitello tonnato, the Piedmontese classic, plus alpine cheeses like Fontina, a plate of salumi, or roasted white fish with herbs.

Tasting Profile

Green apple, lemon peel, dried honey and a nutty, waxy note. Medium- to full-bodied and dry, with firm acidity and a stony, saline finish. More texture than most Italian whites.
