Jaboulet is best known for Hermitage La Chapelle, one of the great red wines of the world, but Parallele 45 is the bottle that actually turns up on French dinner tables, and it has been in the range since 1950. The name comes from the 45th parallel, the line of latitude that crosses France and runs directly over the house's cellars in Tain l'Hermitage. The white is a Rhone blend of Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Clairette, from organically farmed vines averaging around forty years old on clay-limestone studded with the round galets typical of the region. It is whole-bunch pressed, fermented cool in stainless steel and held six months on fine lees, so there is no oak standing between you and the fruit. Serve it cold as an aperitif or with anything out of the sea; it is the kind of house white that overdelivers without asking anything of you.

"This has an open-knit palate that features peach, starfruit and orange flavors, with just a touch of salted buttercream. Silky in feel, with note of chamomile on the clean, pithy finish. Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Clairette. Drink now."

More about Paul Jaboulet Aine

Paul Jaboulet Ainé has been producing Northern Rhone wines for a respectable period of nearly 200 years. They have a large negociant business (making wine from various AOCs with purchased grapes), but also own a whopping 22 hectares of their own land in Hermitage. Their largest plot is in Le Meal, where they have about 30% of their Hermitage vines.

Their signature wine is one of the world’s most iconic wines: “La Chapelle” Hermitage. La Chapelle is simply a trade name that refers to St. Christopher. The wine is a blend of Le Meal, Bessards, Greffieux and another top vineyard site Roucoules. La Chapelle from vintages like 1961, 1978 and 1990 are considered some of the greatest red wines ever made.

Grilled sea bass, oysters and clams, chicken with tarragon, goat cheese salads, or charcuterie and olives before dinner.

Tasting Profile

White peach, citrus and honeysuckle with a touch of apricot from the Viognier. Medium-bodied and dry, rounded by lees aging but with enough acidity to stay lively. Clean, gently floral finish.
