Pierre Peters Champagne BdB Grand Cru Brut Les Chetillons Cuvee Speciale 2009

$42999

Les Chetillons is Pierre Peters' flagship - a single-vineyard, Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs from old Chardonnay vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, the Cote des Blancs commune that produces some of the most ageworthy whites on the planet. Bottled only in the best years, the Cuvee Speciale is widely considered one of the great vintage Champagnes. The 2009 vintage was warm and generous - a year that has rewarded patience handsomely. With more than fifteen years on the cork, this bottle now drinks at peak: still vibrating with Mesnil chalk, but layered with the toasty, honeyed depth that only time can give. A library-quality Champagne in its prime window.

"The 2009 Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is remarkably polished and balanced throughout, with plenty of vintage 2009 radiance. Apricot pit, smoke, peach and spice overtones take shape in a striking Champagne. Although quite open and expressive today, the 2009 is also holding back a considerable amount of pure, unbridled power as well as potential. Ripe and racy to the core, yet with no excess weight, the 2009 stands out for its exceptional balance. Dosage was 4.7 grams per liter, a bit higher than normal. Péters told me he thought the drier vintage needed a little bit more sugar." —Antonio Galloni

"The 2009 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is showing very well, though it has hardly budged since release and continues to offer up a youthful bouquet of citrus oil, honeycomb, freshly baked bread, oyster shell, warm biscuits and nougat. On the palate, it's full-bodied, fleshy and muscular, with a deep and layered core structured around abundant dry extract, concluding with a chalky finish. In a vintage that can be a little facile, this is a very serious, soil-driven Chétillons that has all the makings of a long-lived Champagne." —William Kelley

"A lovely blanc de blancs that offers more with each sip. Firm and structured at first, this is wrapped in a fine, creamy mousse. The flavors expand from poached pear and chalk to toasted hazelnut and glazed apricot to hints of fleur de sel and passion fruit coulis."

More about Pierre Peters

Less than a decade back the grower champagne movement still seemed ‘underground’ and only in its infancy. Fast forward to today - thanks to social media, a handful of devoted importers, and more informed wine drinkers, they are finally gaining well deserved attention. If you weren't aware of the phenomenon, a ‘grower’ is someone that owns and farms their vineyards in addition to making all their champagnes.

One of the stars that has risen is none other than Pierre Peters. Rodolphe Peters is a 4th generation winemaker in his family and took over the estate in 2008, presiding over some of the most coveted land in all of Champagne – Les Mesnil sur Oger. While driving through the Cote des Blancs, it’s difficult not to be mesmerized by all the beautifully tended vines, but what is so special about Mesnil is the soil structure.

Composed of mainly limestone and chalk, and We're talking A LOT of chalk. In fact, the soil is so chalky that some of the producers use pieces of it to write and mark on their barrels! How this kind of soil affects the wine is almost a magical mineral lift that you can only get from these parcels. The balancing act of marrying fruit, acid and minerality in champagne is no trifling task and Rodolphe Peters is someone that has seemingly mastered this. Careful work in the vineyard and cellar ensures the purest expression of Chardonnay and all of his wines go through malolactic fermentation due to their naturally high acidities.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied yet laser-cut: lemon confit, brioche, toasted hazelnut, honeycomb, dried apricot, and an immense saline, chalky finish. Mature complexity layered over Mesnil's electric mineral spine.
