Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc To Kalon Vineyard Reserve 2023

$7499

Fumé Blanc is not a grape. It is a marketing move that worked. In 1968 Robert Mondavi looked at California Sauvignon Blanc — mostly sweet and forgettable at the time — made a dry, barrel-aged version inspired by Pouilly-Fumé in the Loire, and gave it a new name. The name stuck, and so did the wine. This is the Reserve, from To Kalon in Oakville, arguably the most famous piece of ground in Napa: hand-harvested Sauvignon Blanc with a bit of Sémillon, whole-cluster pressed and aged ten months on the lees in French oak. The 2023 growing season was one of the longest in a decade, and that shows up as freshness and detail rather than weight. It also has the structure to sit in a cellar for a few years, which is not a sentence you often get to write about Sauvignon Blanc.

"The 2023 Fumé Blanc The Reserve To Kalon Vineyard is a powerful, tightly wound wine. All of this fruit was sourced from the Monastery Block, one of the most prestigious parts of the vineyard. Powerful and quite structured, the 2023 is going to need a few years to soften. Bracing saline notes, crushed rocks, white orchard fruit and white pepper are all finely sculpted." —Antonio Galloni

"Mondavi's 2023 Fume Blanc The Reserve To Kalon Vineyard boasts those lovely barrel notes that virtually defined this wine in Robert Mondavi's mind. Sourced exclusively from the Monastery Block for this vintage, pear, melon and fig notes lead the way, but there's also enough grapefruit to keep this medium- to full-bodied wine focused and long on the finish. All barrel-fermented and then aged in 24% new French oak for 10 months, the wine is plump and expansive at first, then gradually tighter on the finish, with more grapefruit and lime coming through." —Joe Czerwinski

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied and dry. Citrus and stone fruit layered over a toasty, savory, oak-shaped core. More texture and depth than zip.
