The second wine of one of Tuscany's great outliers, drawn from the very same high-elevation Val d'Orcia vineyards as the flagship and made with the same low yields and ruthless sorting — which is why Le Cupole has long been the smart way into Trinoro. Andrea Franchetti planted this remote corner where Tuscany meets Umbria and Lazio on virgin ground in the early 1990s, and he planted it entirely to Bordelais varieties, with Cabernet Franc leading the way, on clay-limestone and gravel that reminded him of Saint-Emilion. The vines sit between 400 and 620 metres on southwest-facing slopes, high enough that the fruit keeps its freshness and its savory edge rather than baking into jam. The 2023 is 41% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot; the house ferments in stainless steel and ages in cement and older barriques, so the wine tastes of the place and not of new oak. Benjamin Franchetti has taken the estate on since his father's passing, and the standard hasn't slipped.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Located in a remote corner of southeastern Tuscany, Tenuta di Trinoro specializes in rich, age-worthy red wines made of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. The estate sits in viticultural isolation in the Orcia Valley near Sarteano, where Tuscany meets Umbria and Lazio. The founder, Andrea Franchetti, acquired the property in the 1980s and in the beginning of the 1990s started planting his first vines.

Grilled ribeye or bistecca with rosemary and olive oil, lamb chops, duck breast with cherries, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or a plate of aged pecorino.

Tasting Profile

Dark plum and black cherry with graphite, dried herbs and a leafy, peppery Cabernet Franc note. Medium to full bodied, with firm but polished tannins and good acidity keeping it fresh. No obvious new oak — the finish is savory and stony rather than sweet.
