A straight-down-the-middle Napa Cabernet from the house that made its name bending the rules. The Prisoner built its following on a blend of California's odd varieties and a label designed to make you look twice, so a varietal Napa Valley Cabernet is the plainest thing they make — and arguably the most revealing, since there's nowhere to hide behind a blend. It's unapologetically in the plush, generous Napa idiom: 15 months in French and American oak, 55% of it new, which puts spice and toasted vanilla around the ripe black fruit rather than under it. Director of Winemaking Chrissy Wittmann and her team work with more than 100 growers across northern California, and that breadth of sourcing is what lets a wine at this scale stay consistent. If you want Napa Cabernet that tastes like Napa Cabernet — soft, full, long — this is an honest version of it.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Grilled ribeye or a dry-aged porterhouse, short ribs braised in red wine, lamb chops with rosemary, a smash burger with aged cheddar, or barbecued brisket with a peppery bark.

Tasting Profile

Ripe black and blue fruit up front — cassis, blackberry, purple plum — with bay leaf, cracked pepper and crushed herbs behind. Full-bodied and soft, with a plush mid-palate and easygoing tannins rather than a firm grip. Oak spice and toasted vanilla frame the fruit, and the finish is long and warm.
