Dominique Lafon's 2020 Bourgogne Blanc
"If I had to define the style of the DL wines, I would say that the wines have a bit more tension than the wines of Domaine des Comtes Lafon. The élevage on the DL wines is shorter and the plots are mostly located on the upper part of the hillsides, which gives the wines an interesting minerality and tension.”
Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a preeminent Burgundian domaine, with holdings in some of the most esteemed real estate in all of France. At the helm is Dominique Lafon, one of the world's greatest Chardonnay producers.
In 2008, he began producing wine under his own name at a rented cellar literally just down the street. He likes to stay busy.
The fruit for this project comes from two parcels he owns in two of Burgundy's most famous white wine villages: "Les Grandes Coutures" in Meursault and "Les Femelottes" in Puligny-Montrachet. They come to total 4.5ha, tiny for a “négociant” level project. The vines themselves are up to 50 years old, ancient by the same standards.
The vineyards are farmed using the same biodynamic practices and are harvested by the same team as the Comtes Lafon estate. So the same care, and dedication is applied.
Sure, the cellars are rented. The wines are bottled and aged in an old château (in Bligny-lès-Beaune), but even the winemaking is the same, the élevage is just shorter (and down the street, of course). The wines are whole-cluster pressed, racked into old, used barrels for a year and then delicately fined and filtered.
You don’t have to go far to get some of the greatest Chardonnay in the world (from two of its most famous villages), or pay upmarket sums, especially with today’s pricing. And we have to keep reminding everyone, there will be vanishingly small amounts of white Burgundy for 2021, so now is the time to stock up on your favorites.
