The Grand Cru wines of Arnot-Roberts: 2021 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

The Grand Cru wines of Arnot-Roberts: 2021 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

This offer expires Saturday December 10th, 2022

Dear Friends,

At this point you are probably rather familiar with Arnot-Roberts and their groundbreaking wines. We have likely written about them more than any other producers, certainly any stateside one. Each release is an event and because of that we often sell out rather quickly. The wines below are probably their most anticipated releases; Pinot Noir and Chardonnay coming from California equivalents to the Premier & Grand Cru sights of Burgundy. Like the best of those, these wines will age beautifully but can provide pleasure even in their youth.

The 2021 vintage was another fantastic one for California and one of the easiest in recent memory. That along with the fact that restaurants are seemingly busy again, allocations have become very tight once again. Along with the 2021 we are also offering the 2020 Sanford and Benedict Chardonnay that we, somewhat embarrassingly, misplaced in the cellar. Grab yourself a mini-vertical from what many consider California’s best Chardonnay Vineyard. While all of these are rare, some very, we are offering special pricing on all of the wines below, so make sure to snap some up before they're gone.

Cheers,

Wines in this offer

Arnot-Roberts, Santa Cruz Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vyd., 2021 $69.99 $62.99
The Trout Gulch vineyard sits 800’ above the tiny town of Aptos, about 4 miles from the ocean in Santa Cruz county. The site was planted in 1980 to the old Wente clone of Chardonnay which is considered by many to be the heritage selection of Chardonnay in California. The soils in this cool climate site are sandy loam and the vines are carefully tended by Richard Alfaro. Harvest often stretches until mid October and the resulting wines are high in natural acidity with a notable salinity on the palate. Honored to work with such a special site, Nathan and Duncan think the wines they've produced so far from this plot will age well in the cellar for years to come. Picked at 21 brix, whole cluster pressed, native yeast fermentation in stainless steel and then 10 months in neutral French oak.

Arnot-Roberts, Napa Valley Chardonnay, Watson Ranch Vyd., 2021 $44.99 $39.99
The Watson Ranch vineyard is perched on a steep hillside overlooking the San Pablo Bay in the southernmost end of the Napa Valley. The vineyard can be seen on the top of the hill just east of the Green Island Vineyard which we sourced fruit from 2007-09. Exposed and austere, the Watson Ranch is a wind whipped site planted in 1993 by the talented grower Salvador Ramos on marine deposits over limestone. This soil type is extremely rare on the North Coast and lends itself perfectly to growing world class Chardonnay. This soil coupled with organic farming techniques and cool windy conditions give this parcel great potential to produce Chardonnay of singular character. Whole-cluster pressed to stainless steel for native primary fermentation at ambient temperature. No heating or cooling applied. Full malolactic.

Arnot Roberts, Sta Rita Hills Chardonnay, Sanford & Benedict, 2020 & 2021 $69.99 $62.99
Sanford & Benedict is home to some of California's oldest and most pedigreed Chardonnay vines. The fruit for this comes from the original vines planted in 1971. These own rooted organic vines tap through the thin topsoil into the seam of limestone and even some quartz. The resulting wines are always mineral driven and complex, layered with deep fruit flavors and aromas with the site’s unmistakable saline acidity. Rich, balanced and elegant, this is California's answer to Grand Cru White Burgundy.

Arnot-Roberts, Carmel Valley Pinot Noir, Fox Creek Vineyard, 2021 $76.99 $69.99
The Fox Creek Vineyard is a stunning planting situated at 1100’ on a remote ridge above the Carmel Valley in Monterey County. The vineyard was planted in 2006 to Dijon clones 667 and 115. This meticulously farmed vineyard produces tiny, compact clusters of fruit that deliver soaring aromatics and concentrated, crystalline flavors inflected with salinity from the influence of the nearby ocean. The long, cool growing conditions at Fox Creek, coupled with organic farming techniques allow for pure varietal expression.

Arnot-Roberts, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, Heaven & Earth Vnyd., 2021  $75.99 $69.99
The Heaven and Earth vineyard is considered by many winemakers amongst the best sights for Pinot Noir anywhere. It's a stunningly beautiful hillside planting, tucked into a secluded coastal valley just east of the tiny town of Occidental in western Sonoma County. It is farmed by viticultural guru Greg Adams, who also tends the Que Syrah vineyard a bit further west. A forested ridge to the west shields the vines from the direct impacts of incoming weather from the nearby Pacific Ocean. The unique position of this site coupled with its inherently short diurnal shift allows the Pinot Noir to ripen slowly throughout the day and night, resulting in small berries and dense structure in the wine. Deep, and effusively aromatic, the resulting wine benefits from fermentation without destemming, to elevate the detailed texture, soaring aromatics and fine grained tannin that are hallmarks of this amazing vineyard.

Arnot-Roberts, Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir, Peter Martin Ray Vyd., 2021  $85.99 $78.99
The Peter Martin Ray vineyard is part of the original planting of Pinot Noir on Mt. Eden above the town of Saratoga in the Eastern Santa Cruz Mountains. Dating to the late 1800’s, this site is of historical significance as many of today’s modern Pinot plantings have been made with genetic material that originated on this hill. The vineyard is 3 acres of old stake trained vines that are dry-farmed at 1,600’ in Franciscan Shale soils. The vineyard is still owned and farmed by Peter Martin Ray the son of legendary California vintner Martin “Rusty” Ray. The site is exposed and the soils here are notoriously poor in nutrients which lead the vines to struggle for survival. The resulting wine is true to its mountain grown roots and is a nod to the rich history of this site. We are honored to work with the Ray family and look forward to many more years of harvesting beautiful fruit from this plot. 100% whole cluster. Native yeasts for both primary and secondary fermentations. Basket pressed to neutral, French oak barrels.
