Christina: Austrian Nature in the Glass

Christina: Austrian Nature in the Glass

The story of Christina is on the label. It represents the critters that happily cohabitate with Christina Netzl in her family vineyards. Things weren't always this way. In 2007 Christina returned to the family's 70 acres, after studying oenology and wine management in London. She found the family land, while still productive, was starting to show the toll of decades of conventional farming. Thus in 2013 she began converting to organic techniques, and today the estate is certified organic.

Located in the Carnuntum winemaking region, the winery is just east of Vienna and north of the Neusidler. The warm summer days are cooled off by cold winds blowing off the Danube in the evening. This, along with high iron red gravel and loess soils, help retain acidity in Christina’s wines. Christina knew that they had all of the ingredients to produce the type of wine she loves to drink.

With the help of her mother and her best friend, Christina makes her wines using primitive cellar practices that would be familiar to the Romans who once occupied these lands. She uses zero additives through the wine making process except for a minute amount of sulfur before. Her wines are never fined or filtered.

By far her most popular wine is the exceptional Gruner Veltliner. Fresh, vibrant and filled with the aromas and flavors of citrus, tropical fruits, wildflower and freshly cut herbs this wine is a knockout for summer picnics and al fresco dinners. The wine buzzes with an electric energy that we have come to expect from the best natural wines.

Christina, Gruner Veltliner, 2021 $19.99
A beautiful hazy flaxen color, this is as electric and vibrant as wine gets. Aromas of freshly cut flower stalks along with, golden kiwi, tangerine and pomelo. Along with similar flavors, the palate is punctuated by yeast and salty notes. An incredibly refreshing wine that pairs beautifully with rich simple foods such as fried chicken and schnitzel.
