Farella: Cool Climate Napa Cabernet

Farella: Cool Climate Napa Cabernet

Coombsville isn’t the first place most people think of when they think “Napa Cab.” And that’s kind of the point. Tucked into Napa’s southeastern corner, closer to the bay than to Highway 29, it’s cooler here. Slower. The soils are volcanic ash and cobblestone. The fog lingers. And the wines—well, they’re different.

Farella has been farming this land since 1977, long before “Coombsville” was an AVA or a buzzword. This is a true estate: same family, same vineyard, year after year. They don’t buy fruit. They don’t chase trends. They just make serious, structured Cabernet that shows what this part of Napa can do when you let the place lead.

The 2019 is a perfect example. It’s Cabernet Sauvignon, yes—but not the kind that tries to knock you over with oak or alcohol. There’s restraint here. A bit of lift. It’s powerful, but it’s also precise. The acidity keeps it honest, the tannins are firm but polished, and the whole thing feels grounded in something real.
If you’ve written off Napa as too glossy or too expensive, Farella’s 2019 is a great reminder that there’s another side. One that’s quieter, older, and still deeply committed to making great wine from the ground up.
