Great Value from a living legend of white burgundy
This might be the best-value white wine in all of Burgundy.
James Suckling
You might think that Dominique Lafon needs no introduction. After all, he’s been the steward of his family’s Domaine des Comte Lafon since 1983, and built it into one of White Burgundy’s super-elite producers – only Coche, Domaine Leflaive and the like are peers. And when he bought vineyards in the Maconnais and started his Heritiers du Comte Lafon line there, he sparked a whole movement into the region by top producers – including Domaine Leflaive.
But this is Burgundy and there are always wrinkles. Always developments to follow and details that reward understanding. Like today’s wines, from his “Dominique Lafon” project – yes, a third project. He started this one in the Cote de Beaune to have a space to experiment, adapt, and generally try new things without having to make it fit the voice and style of the family domaine.
The results are, as you would expect, spectacular. All the quality of the Comte Lafon wines, in a different frame. There are some fancy, collectible wines. But in a way the best examples of what he’s doing are to be found in his baby wines. They’re farmed biodynamically by the same Comte Lafon team. The winemaking is as precise. The passion, the ceaseless studying and learning – that’s all there.
So what is different? Well, the prices. And the availability (we have DL wines to offer!). But in terms of what’s inside the bottle? We should probably just leave that Dominique himself to explain:
“If I had to define the style of the DL wines, I would say that the wines have a bit more tension than the wines of Domaine des Comtes Lafon. The élevage on the wines is shorter and the plots are mostly located on the upper part of the hillsides, which gives the wines an interesting minerality and tension.”
We’re thrilled to have two gorgeous wines from Dominique to share with you today. Of course, there’s very little wine so please don’t wait to click through and grab yours today!
Dominique Lafon Bourgogne Aligote 2023 - $42.99
From two sources this year. Picked 28th September, which gives the wine lifted aromatics, though with no sense of late picked. Made in tank, “like a Riesling”, says Dominique. The 2023 Aligoté is generous on the palate, but with energy behind, properly persistent, with an interesting nuttiness. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy
Dominique Lafon Bourgogne Blanc 2023 - $46.99
This might be the best-value white wine in all of Burgundy. Mineral with a racy acidity and high-tension mouthfeel, fleshed out with notes of lemon peel, white peaches, grapefruit and white flowers. Creamy, rounded finish. There is nothing more you could ask for in a great glass of chardonnay. James Suckling
