Mountain wine from... Greece?
This probably isn't what you think of, when you think of Greece. Not the Greece of tiny islands and sunny summer days; rather, the Peloponnese Greece of rocky mountains and cool, cool nights.
But this is an ideal wine country, and it has been for centuries. As far back as 150 AD, leading geographers were rhapsodizing about how fine the local villages were for winemaking. And on some level, not much has changed chez Tetramythos. The Natur Roditis feels like stepping into another era. It's made with no interventions before bottling (at which point they use a tiny bit of sulfur to keep the wine stable for shipping to us). It has the crispness of the cool nights, the bright, lemon-peel fruit of the hot days, and the refined minerality of the stony soils: the essential elements.
But the wine also isn't too obscure. If you need to pick a bottle for a group of friends, some of whom want a wine of terroir transparency, another who wants a natural wine, and a third who just wants something yummy that reminds them of Sancerre, well, this is your bottle! Honesty and character for anyone who is paying particular attention to the wine, and straight up deliciousness for anyone who just wants something tasty. All of that, and a great price too! Timeless wine for a price that feels like we're stepping back in time: What could be better?
Tetramythos Peloponnese Roditis Natur 2022 - $21.99
