Provence is rosé country, which makes Henri Milan's Le Vallon something different: a red from one of the south's most uncompromising natural winemakers. Milan takes the freedom seriously. Since the 2007 vintage, Le Vallon has been bottled as table wine instead of under the local appellation, and it replaced the domaine's old 'Domaine Milan' cuvée. Milan took over the estate from his father Robert in 1986. It sits in the foothills of the Alpilles near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and he has farmed it organically since 1988. The domaine also follows biodynamic principles. In the cellar the house rule is that nothing goes in: no additives, no enzymes, no outside yeasts, and little or no added sulfur. Since 2000 the domaine's reds have had short whole-cluster macerations and natural vinification. Think of it as a grower's red with real conviction behind it, not a postcard from Provence.

More about Henri Milan

Nestled in the foothills of the Alpilles mountain range, in a gorgeous section of Provence better known for bulk rosé and summertime tourism than for fine wine, Domaine Milan is an oasis of vibrant, organically-farmed vineyards and some truly glorious wines. But it wasn't always this way. In the 1980s, after the iconic soil scientist Claude Bourguignon praised the unique quality of the yellow and blue marl soils sitting on a bedrock of pure limestone — similar to the famed terroir found at Château Rayas — Henri made the radical decision to take back his family vines, convert to organic viticulture and to naturally vinify and bottle his own wine.

Today, Henri’s son Théo is at the helm and continues his father’s work, farming with great intention and care, and crafting wines that deliver the unfiltered pleasures of low-intervention wine — without veering too far into the wild.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Lamb chops grilled with rosemary and garlic; ratatouille or tian of summer vegetables; merguez off the grill; pissaladière; roast chicken with herbes de Provence and black olives.

Tasting Profile

Expect a juicy, lightly built southern red: Cinsault and Grenache typically bring red cherry, raspberry and strawberry fruit with wild Provençal herbs and a peppery lift. Short whole-cluster macerations usually keep tannins soft and the texture fresh, while natural winemaking can add a slightly wild, earthy edge. Think a more savoury, sun-warmed Beaujolais, finishing dry and bright.
