We spend a fair amount of time writing about Saumur, and with good reason: this is one of the most dynamic wine regions in France. The best sites are capable of making wines which can rival grand cru Burgundy and top classé Bordeaux.
It's easy to focus on Clos Rougeard, the most famous address in the region, whose highly coveted wines are now becoming as expensive as they are hard to find. But those willing to dig a little deeper can find several other great producers in the region. Antoine Sanzay is who we are most excited about these days.
Sanzay has great terroir, with old vines that are growing on the classic chalky, tuffeau substrate that contributes to the distinct mineral complexity of Saumur Cabernet Franc. While top reds from Saumur are often compared to Right Bank Bordeaux, Sanzay's wines have silky texture and an aromatic grace that is bringing him many fans among Burgundy enthusiasts.
