What is this wine?
Fratelli Alessandria, a historic family estate in Verduno, is celebrated for its elegant and classically styled Barolo. Gramolere is a single-vineyard cru in Monforte d’Alba, planted on sandy marl at about 400 meters elevation. Known for its combination of structure and fragrance, Gramolere often produces Barolo with firm tannins and refined aromatics. The 2021 vintage is regarded as a superb, classical year in Barolo—wines are structured, balanced, and long-lived.

Why get this wine?
This cru bottling brings together the elegance of Fratelli Alessandria’s style with the power of Monforte terroir. For collectors, it’s a bottle that will age gracefully for decades, offering serious pedigree at prices that remain more approachable than many marquee Barolo producers. Gramolere is one of the Barolo crus gaining more attention, and 2021 is a vintage built for the cellar.

What does this wine taste like?
Red cherry, plum, and pomegranate with rose petal, licorice, and earthy spice. Medium to full-bodied with firm, chalky tannins, bright acidity, and a long, mineral finish. Powerful yet elegant.

When should you drink this wine?
Best from 2028–2045. Decant if opening young to soften the structure. A natural partner for braised beef, game, or mushroom and truffle dishes.

The small village of Verduno is the home of Pelaverga, but less than a dozen local producers have stayed true to Verduno’s special grape. It’s this sun-bleached hamlet, kissed by the breezes coming off the river Tanaro, that the Alessandria family calls home.

The Alessandria "brothers" have been farming grapes and making Barolo in the ancient village of Verduno since the 1800's. Indeed they and some of their neighbors were among the very first to bottle the dry, complex and age-worthy Nebbiolo that Barolo is now famous for. Today, the actual brothers are Gian Battista and Alessandro, with Alessandro's son Vittore increasingly at the helm, and they work together much the same as their family has for generations.

Farming is crucial: they use organic principles in all of their 30 hectares of vineyards.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Barolo Gramolere is a hugely promising wine. Black cherry, gravel, spice, new leather, licorice and crushed rocks add to an impression of gravitas. A dark, hulking wine, the 2021 is going to need time to be at its best. Today, it is a touch reduced, but a racking should take care of that." -Antonio Galloni

"From a vineyard site in Monforte d'Alba, the Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Barolo Gramolere (with 7,000 bottles produced) shows a little more structure and power with tightly knit fruit, dark plum, ferrous earth and licorice. This vineyard comes to family ownership via the matriarch, Flavia Manzone, who was born in this village. Polished tannins push a smooth-sailing mouthfeel." -Monica Larner

"Wafting out of the glass, this wine is like walking through a cherry orchard just as the fruit reaches perfect ripeness, that moment when everything aligns. This refined Barolo captures that same sweet spot, where crushed cherries mingle with cracked pepper and sun-warmed herbs in the air. The palate continues the story with precise balance, as refined tannins frame deep red fruits like perfectly placed stones in a garden path. A tremendous effort of a wine."
