Fratelli Alessandria Barolo Comune di Verduno 2021

$7599

From one of Verduno's star producers, this Barolo captures the feminine elegance that the San Lorenzo hill is famed for—sweeter notes of nutmeg and tobacco weaving through a solid core of cherry and blackcurrant fruit. Fratelli Alessandria's traditional approach (whole-berry fermentation with 25-30 days of maceration) and 25-hectoliter cask aging for three years builds a wine that's refined without sacrificing power. The family's commitment since 1830 shows in every measured, confident bottling.

"The 2021 Barolo del Comune di Verduno is a blend of five vineyards across the village. Aromatic and polished yet also wonderfully deep, the 2021 is shaping up to be a real beauty. There's gorgeous density here, not to mention tons of personality." —Antonio Galloni

"Fruit for the Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Barolo del Comune di Verduno comes from five vineyard sites in Verduno: Riva Rocca, Rocche dell'Olmo, Campasso, Pisapola and Boscato. This was the first Barolo del Comune di Verduno to hit the market (with the 2017 vintage). The bouquet focuses on redcurrant and tart cherry, and there is a pinch of cinnamon buried in there as well. This is a pretty Barolo that manages elegance and an easy-drinking style. This 20,000-bottle release ages in Slavonian and French oak botti for three years." —Monica Larner

"The 2021 San Lorenzo di Verduno from Fratelli Alessandria is a stunner, starting with its intense fragrance of violet, rose, perfumed berry, forest floor and new leather. The palate is full-bodied and utterly delicious, delivering ripe black cherry, black raspberry, licorice and white truffle before a savory finish. Tightly knit, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity keep it balanced while a hint of almond liqueur lingers on the finish." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Fratelli Alessandria

The small village of Verduno is the home of Pelaverga, but less than a dozen local producers have stayed true to Verduno’s special grape. It’s this sun-bleached hamlet, kissed by the breezes coming off the river Tanaro, that the Alessandria family calls home.

The Alessandria "brothers" have been farming grapes and making Barolo in the ancient village of Verduno since the 1800's. Indeed they and some of their neighbors were among the very first to bottle the dry, complex and age-worthy Nebbiolo that Barolo is now famous for. Today, the actual brothers are Gian Battista and Alessandro, with Alessandro's son Vittore increasingly at the helm, and they work together much the same as their family has for generations.

Farming is crucial: they use organic principles in all of their 30 hectares of vineyards.
