What is this wine?
Fratelli Alessandria is a historic, family-run estate in Verduno, one of Barolo’s most distinctive villages. San Lorenzo di Verduno is a cru on the northern edge of the Barolo zone, with sandy soils and cooler exposures that produce elegant, lifted expressions of Nebbiolo. The Alessandria family farms organically and vinifies traditionally, letting the terroir shine. The 2021 vintage is widely praised as a classical, structured year, yielding wines of balance, freshness, and long aging potential.

Why get this wine?
San Lorenzo is less well-known than Monvigliero, but it consistently delivers aromatic, graceful Barolo with refined tannins. In the hands of Fratelli Alessandria—among Verduno’s benchmark producers—it’s a cru that overdelivers both in quality and value. The 2021 vintage gives it extra depth and cellar potential, making it a savvy choice for collectors and drinkers alike.

What does this wine taste like?
Red cherry, strawberry, and pomegranate with notes of rose petal, licorice, and white pepper. Medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannins, lively acidity, and a long, mineral finish. Perfumed and elegant, yet structured.

When should you drink this wine?
Best from 2027–2042. Decant if drinking young to release its aromatics. A natural partner for mushroom risotto, braised rabbit, or truffle dishes.

The small village of Verduno is the home of Pelaverga, but less than a dozen local producers have stayed true to Verduno’s special grape. It’s this sun-bleached hamlet, kissed by the breezes coming off the river Tanaro, that the Alessandria family calls home.

The Alessandria "brothers" have been farming grapes and making Barolo in the ancient village of Verduno since the 1800's. Indeed they and some of their neighbors were among the very first to bottle the dry, complex and age-worthy Nebbiolo that Barolo is now famous for. Today, the actual brothers are Gian Battista and Alessandro, with Alessandro's son Vittore increasingly at the helm, and they work together much the same as their family has for generations.

Farming is crucial: they use organic principles in all of their 30 hectares of vineyards.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 96
"The 2021 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno is a wine of translucence, elegance and finesse. Bright acids cut through a core of red/purplish fruit, chalk, slate, crushed rocks and white pepper. Rose petal, blood orange peel and mint resonate on the high-toned, intensely saline finish. San Lorenzo is often a potent Barolo, but in 2021, it comes across as especially finessed." -Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"This wine was introduced in 1997 and was the first single-vineyard expression from this MGA site. The Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno (with 5,000 bottles created) has a sweet side with nutmeg and tobacco, but it also presents a solid core of cherry fruit and blackcurrant. This nicely balanced expression has more accessible tannins for medium-term drinking." -Monica Larner

"Ripe wild strawberries and black cherries soar from the glass, chased by dried black tea, sweet anise, and a garden's worth of thyme and marjoram. Pure class runs through this thoroughbred. The fruit and fine tannins play off each other like old friends, rolling into a savory finish that'll make you wish you bought more. Drink from 2027"
