Inspired by the great wines of Pomerol, Michael Polenske bought a small vineyard in the heart of the Oak Knoll district of Napa Valley, with the sole intention of producing great wines from Merlot-based blends. He named this project Blackbird Vineyard after his grape of choice (Merlot being French patois for "little blackbird"). Since the first Vintage in 2003 (a mere 90 cases) the wines have received critical acclaim and have been consumed voraciously by a small group of loyal fans.
