Though the wines are pretty under-the-radar here, the Legrands have a viticultural history in Saumur that stretches back centuries, and accordingly they have some pretty choice plots at their disposal. Clotilde, who took over the domaine in 2014, is the first woman in the Legrand family to make wine.
Legrand farms sustainably, but isn’t worried about organic certification. Their website says: “Our vinifications are done without the addition of sulfites. Even if we are not certified Organic Wine, the total SO2 content of our wines is much lower than the maximum content required in Organic Farming.” As is typical for the appellation, the wines are vinified and aged in a cool, ancient cellar carved into the limestone tuffeau.
