The Colin family has been tending vineyards and making wine in their ancestral village of Vertus for over 200 years. Richard, Romain and Delphine Colin are now at the helm and have continued the family’s long tradition of excellence.
The focus is on Chardonnay, which is not surprising given their location in the southern Cotes de Blancs. Most of the holdings are in 1er Cru Vertus, but they also have some Grand Cru parcels in Oiry and Cramant. In addition they are one of the few growers that have a bit of Pinot Noir in Vertus as well. That comes in handy for their rosé.
Though tradition is key, there have been some innovations and changes over the past few years. Most importantly is the conversion to organic farming, which is complete in about 30% of the vineyards and continuing throughout the estate. In the cellar fermentation is stainless steel tanks and aging is in a combination of tanks and barrels. Nothing too fancy here, just straightforward, terroir driven winemaking.
