Albariño isn't going anywhere. Some may have guessed that this grape's popularity would come and go like many trends in the wine world, but instead it is more popular now than ever and has become a "go-to" for lovers of expressive, saline and mineral driven white wine.
There are now dozens of excellent producers available here in the US, but one of the originals that helped introduce everyone to the fresh, Galician style of Albariño has to be Do Ferreiro. Top Iberian importer De Maison has represented this now iconic estate for well over a decade and their wines are certainly a big part of the success of the "Green Spain" movement in the U.S.
Do Ferreiro is located in the Salnès sub-zone of Rías Biaxes, which encompasses mountains and hills that rise right along the Atlantic coast in Northwest Spain. The proximity to cool ocean breezes and a more temperate environment than most of the rest of Spain is how they are able to make such exceptionally pure and crisp wines.
The colder water of the Atlantic also provides some incredible options for a whole bounty of fresh sea fare, and the wines of Do Ferreiro are a perfect match for everything that you find in the ocean.
