Aubert de Villaine is co-director of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Burgundy’s most famous and sought-after domaine. He and his wife also own a fantastic yet modest property in Bouzeron, Domaine A & P de Villaine. Aubert had been co-director of DRC for about a decade when they decided to move to this more pastoral, rustic village that is about 45 minutes south of Vosne.
Here Aubert was able to do what he loves and knows best: farm grapes and make wine. He has applied the same exacting methods as he introduced at DRC (biodynamic farming and very meticulous, hands-off winemaking) to the humble appellations of Bourgogne, Bouzeron and Mercury and in fact some of the things he has learned here over the years have been brought back to the regal confines in Vosne-Romanée.
Pierre de Benoist, Aubert's nephew, has been running the domaine for some years now and is the perfect person to continue his uncle's push and passion for these wines. Pierre is very much a mystic, but with a great sense of humor and curiosity.
