Domaine des Closiers is a new project that involves Nady Foucault (Clos Rougeard) and Michel Chevré, who worked for biodynamic guru Thierry Germain for years before starting his own Saumur domain, Clos de l’Ecotard.
The domaine belongs to oenologist Anatole de la Brosse. Chevré helped with the viticulture, Foucault in the cellar. 2020 is only the second vintage from this domaine, but the critical praise is already rolling in (see the Bettane & Desseauve quote above).
Do the wines taste just like Clos Rougeard? Not exactly; the style is a little different. But the quality is easily as good as I hoped, and the pricing is surprisingly reasonable.
The wines are concentrated, elegant, and classic. They share similarities with not just Rougeard, but also Chateau Yvonne and Germain’s Roches Neuves.
