What is this wine?

Domaine Michel Lafarge, based in Volnay, is one of Burgundy’s most revered traditional domaines, known for crafting soulful, ageworthy wines of purity and finesse. Now run by Frédéric and Chantal Lafarge, the estate has been farmed biodynamically since 2000, with meticulous vineyard work and minimal intervention in the cellar—native fermentations, whole clusters, and aging in mostly neutral oak.
The Beaune 1er Cru “Les Grèves” 2022 comes from one of Beaune’s most esteemed Premier Cru sites. Les Grèves sits mid-slope on deep, rocky limestone soils that produce wines with a fine balance of structure and perfume—Beaune at its most elegant and complex. The Lafarge vines here are old and low-yielding, delivering remarkable concentration even in generous vintages like 2022.

Why get this wine?

This is one of the great insider wines of the Côte de Beaune—a serious, long-lived red that combines Beaune’s supple charm with the precision and refinement that define Lafarge’s style. The 2022 vintage adds a touch of warmth and generosity to its typically mineral core, making it both immediately expressive and cellarworthy.

What does this wine taste like?

Beautifully aromatic, with red and black cherry, rose petal, forest floor, and spice. The palate is silky yet firm, showing fine-grained tannins, bright acidity, and a persistent, mineral-driven finish.

When should you drink this wine?

Drink 2027–2042. Decant for an hour if opened young. Excellent with roast duck, game birds, or dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles.

Lafarge is one of the great names in Volnay, some would say the greatest. His wines are sought out the world over, and we are always excited when our allocation arrives.

Lafarge’s home territory is Volnay, though he also has holdings in nearby Beaune and Meursault. This is an old estate that started bottling their wines in the early 1900s. Only Armand Rousseau, the DRC, and maybe two or three other growers have that kind of history.

The wines of Lafarge are magical. Despite being made in a decidedly old-school style—really no different than a generation or even two ago—they display incredible purity and not a hint of rusticity. It is the same kind of magic that Jacky Truchot was able to conjure. We only wish we could get more.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

BH 91-94
"A perfumed and broad-ranging nose features notes of plum, dark cherry, exotic tea and a whiff of crushed fennel. The succulent, even suave, but impressively punchy larger-bodied flavors display first-rate power and drive on the stony, balanced and very clearly built-to-age finale. This is always one of my favorite wines chez Lafarge as it often seems underappreciated relative to the Volnay 1ers that routinely receive top billing. If you have the patience, this is potentially sensational." -Allen Meadows

Robert Parker

RP 91-93
"Offering up aromas of dark berries, cherries and plums mingled with peonies and spices, the 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a rich core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins." -William Kelley
