This is Châteauneuf-du-Pape made for pleasure now rather than patience. Saintes Pierres is the second red of Château de Nalys, and Guigal picks its grape varieties and plots specifically for freshness, then ferments it in stainless steel and foudres to keep that brightness intact. The fruit is split almost evenly across three terroirs: Nalys itself, on red sandstone and safres, plus Bois Sénéchal and La Crau, both on the ancient Rhône alluvial stones known as galets. The name means "holy stones," a nod to those soils and to the appellation's papal history. The Guigal family bought Nalys in 2017, a dream three generations in the making. Every bunch is picked by hand and sorted, which is serious work for a second wine, and the kind of overdelivery we keep coming back to this house for. It's a full, warm 15.5% wine, but the producer says it's balanced enough to open young.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Saintes Pierres de Nalys initiates with red and black cherry, licorice, minty subtleties and dried herbs. Full-bodied, concentrated and well-rounded, the 2022 focuses on a juicy core of fruit yet carries sufficient structure to benefit from a few more years in bottle. A refreshing finish rounds it up."

Robert Parker

"Aromas of dark cherries, spices and flowers introduce the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Saintes Pierres, a medium- to full-bodied, charming and energetic wine that concludes with a hints of baked dark berries on the finish"

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Velvety and silky in feel, with decadent stream of mocha-coated cherry and grilled herbs draped with wood spice, anise and and subtle toast. Salty acidity kicks in, keeping tension high through the long, very full-bodied glistening finish. Polished and stylish. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Muscardin, Mourvèdre, Vaccarèse and Terret. Drink now through 2040."

More about

This is a must-know producer, primarily because they produce about 1/3 of the AOC’s wines through both contracts and their own holdings. They are also hugely important for the historical reasons mentioned above. With their “La La’s” – the three single vineyard wines they release called La Landonne, La Turque and La Mouline – they have produced vintage after vintage of monumental wines that have won top praise in the international press.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Lamb navarin or other slow-braised lamb; grilled lamb chops or rib-eye; a board of saucisson and other charcuterie; aged Comté or tomme.

Tasting Profile

Expect a fresher, more approachable take on Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Grenache-led red fruit like raspberry and cherry, with hints of wild herbs, pepper and earth. It's full-bodied and warm, but supple tannins and bright, juicy acidity keep it lively rather than heavy, and it finishes dry and savoury.
