E. Guigal Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2018

$5499

Guigal is a big house, but big here means they can select ruthlessly and then sit on the wine for years before anyone gets to buy it. Their Chateauneuf is the sunlit southern counterpoint to the Northern Rhone reds that made them famous: Grenache-led, warm, generous, and full of the wild-herb garrigue character that only the South delivers. Line it up next to their Cote-Rotie and you have a two-glass masterclass in what the Rhone actually is -- North versus South, pepper versus sun. It's elegant, it's ready, and it's the kind of bottle you want sitting on the rack for whenever the occasion shows up.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2018 Châteauneuf-du-Pape presents a complex aromatic profile consisting of ripe strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, rose petal and licorice. Polished and harmonious, it offers excellent flavor concentration and closes with good grip on the savory finish." —Nicolas Greinacher

Wine Spectator

92 points

"Round and softened by time, this wine's bottle aging has brought out softened tobacco notes that layer over cherry and bitter almond skin. Reveals orange peel acidity and cocoa bean on the palate, with campfire and olive tapenade accents."

More about E. Guigal

This is a must-know producer, primarily because they produce about 1/3 of the AOC’s wines through both contracts and their own holdings. They are also hugely important for the historical reasons mentioned above. With their “La La’s” – the three single vineyard wines they release called La Landonne, La Turque and La Mouline – they have produced vintage after vintage of monumental wines that have won top praise in the international press.
