This bottle is the idea that made Roulot famous: one named parcel of village Meursault, vinified and bottled on its own instead of disappearing into a blend. Guy Roulot used the family's distilling success to buy small plots around Meursault. By the 1970s he was bottling them separately, only a generation after the domaine had been sending its grapes to the still, and that's how Roulot came to be known as the master of the lieu-dit (a named vineyard parcel). Roulot owns just under a hectare of Meix Chavaux, with vines around fifty years old. When Guy died suddenly in 1982, his son Jean-Marc was pursuing an acting career in Paris. In the meantime an American, Ted Lemon, ran the cellar before going home to California to found Littorai. Jean-Marc has farmed organically since the early 1990s: no herbicides, ploughed soils. Roulot whites are famously austere and "on the razor's edge" when young, then broaden with age. If you want to see what the domaine's reputation is built on without going up to the premier crus, start here.

More about

The name Roulot is now a synonym for the very best wine that the village of Meursault can offer. It is rather remarkable when you consider that just 2 generations back the Roulot's were known as producers of Burgundian brandy and eau de vie. But Guy Roulot began leveraging the family's distilling success to purchase small plots of vines in Meursault and by the 1970's was known as a pioneer for producing top quality chardonnay from distinct parcels or ""lieu-dits"".

When Guy passed away unexpectedly in the early '80's his son Jean-Marc was pursuing acting in Paris. In 1989 he returned to take on the reigns of the small Domaine and in the following decades built on his father's success so well that the wines are now extremely hard to acquire and to afford for most of us.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared sea scallops with brown butter, poulet de Bresse with morels and cream, warm gougères, or a wedge of young Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect Roulot's signature tension rather than buttery Meursault richness: lemon, white orchard fruit and a hint of hazelnut over a chalky, stony core, with bright, cutting acidity. Typically taut and austere in youth, this medium-bodied white should broaden with time in bottle into a silkier, more generous texture, finishing long, dry and saline.
