Pierre Moncuit's old-vine statement: Grand Cru Chardonnay from Les Chétillons in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, from vines approaching a century old, in a region where vineyards are usually ripped out and replanted at around 25. The house bottles Cuvée Nicole only in exceptional years, so the existence of a 2008 tells you the family thought the year was worth it. It's named for Nicole Moncuit, who has run the vineyards and cellar since 1977. It's her creation, and the vines are the family's historic anchor in the village. She has recently propagated the parcel by sélection massale (taking cuttings from the old vines themselves) to keep its heritage alive. The Moncuit approach is pure and simple: every wine comes from a single vintage with no reserve wines, goes through full malolactic in stainless steel, and never sees oak. There isn't a barrel in the winery, because the family thinks wood gets in the way of Mesnil's delicacy and minerality. Add an Extra Brut finish and nothing stands between you and the chalk. It's grower Champagne at its most honest, from a family that has farmed Le Mesnil since the end of the 19th century.

"The 2008 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Nicole Vieilles Vignes is one of the most potent wines in the range. It emerges from vines in the famed Chétillons lieu-dit in Mesnil that are more than 100 years old. Lemon confit, marzipan, dried flowers and candied apricot are all dialed up. Broad, creamy and super expressive, the 2008 is a total delight. Its a great example of what this vintage has to offer in the Côte des Blancs. Dosage is 3 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

More about

The Moncuit family planted vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the great Chardonnay villages of the Côte des Blancs, back in 1889, and Pierre Moncuit started making his own wine in 1928. His daughter Nicole ran the cellar from 1977, and her daughter Valérie took the reins in 2007. Home turf is all Chardonnay on chalk. The flagship Delos Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru comes as Brut and Extra Brut, while the old-vine Cuvée Nicole is made only in exceptional vintages.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters or langoustine crudo; butter-poached lobster; turbot or sole with beurre blanc; gougères or a wedge of well-aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs profile: lemon, green apple and white flowers over a pronounced chalky minerality, with the brioche and toasted-nut notes that extended lees ageing typically brings. With no oak and an Extra Brut finish, the palate is typically taut and precise, with fine bubbles, high acidity and a long, saline, bone-dry finish.
