What is this wine?
Fratelli Alessandria is a historic, family-run estate based in Verduno, one of Barolo’s northernmost villages, prized for its elegant, aromatic style of Nebbiolo. The Barolo del Comune di Verduno is a village-level bottling, blending fruit from several estate parcels, including vineyards near Monvigliero. The 2021 vintage is shaping up to be a classic: structured, vibrant, and beautifully balanced, with excellent cellar potential.

Why get this wine?
Verduno has become one of the Barolo region’s most exciting communes, with wines prized for finesse, perfume, and approachability. Fratelli Alessandria is one of Verduno’s benchmark producers, and this village Barolo offers a textbook introduction to both the terroir and the estate’s refined, traditional style. It delivers Barolo authenticity at excellent value compared to single-cru bottlings.

What does this wine taste like?
Fragrant red cherry, raspberry, and rose petal with hints of licorice, anise, and spice. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins, lively acidity, and a mineral-driven finish. Silky and precise.

When should you drink this wine?
Approachable from 2026, with a long life through 2042. Decant if drinking young. Excellent with braised meats, truffle risotto, or aged cheeses.

The small village of Verduno is the home of Pelaverga, but less than a dozen local producers have stayed true to Verduno’s special grape. It’s this sun-bleached hamlet, kissed by the breezes coming off the river Tanaro, that the Alessandria family calls home.

The Alessandria "brothers" have been farming grapes and making Barolo in the ancient village of Verduno since the 1800's. Indeed they and some of their neighbors were among the very first to bottle the dry, complex and age-worthy Nebbiolo that Barolo is now famous for. Today, the actual brothers are Gian Battista and Alessandro, with Alessandro's son Vittore increasingly at the helm, and they work together much the same as their family has for generations.

Farming is crucial: they use organic principles in all of their 30 hectares of vineyards.

"The 2021 Barolo del Comune di Verduno is a blend of five vineyards across the village. Aromatic and polished yet also wonderfully deep, the 2021 is shaping up to be a real beauty. There's gorgeous density here, not to mention tons of personality." -Antonio Galloni

"Fruit for the Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Barolo del Comune di Verduno comes from five vineyard sites in Verduno: Riva Rocca, Rocche dell'Olmo, Campasso, Pisapola and Boscato. This was the first Barolo del Comune di Verduno to hit the market (with the 2017 vintage). The bouquet focuses on redcurrant and tart cherry, and there is a pinch of cinnamon buried in there as well. This is a pretty Barolo that manages elegance and an easy-drinking style. This 20,000-bottle release ages in Slavonian and French oak botti for three years." -Monica Larner
