Pierre Moncuit Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Delos NV

This is Pierre Moncuit's flagship Delos with almost nothing added at the end: about 3 grams per litre of dosage. It's 100% Chardonnay from the family's Grand Cru vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the great Chardonnay villages of the Côte des Blancs. There isn't a barrel involved. The family thinks wood gets in the way of Mesnil's delicacy and minerality, so the wine is made in stainless steel, goes through malolactic, and rests about three years before release. Nicole Moncuit has grown the grapes and made the wine since she and her brother Yves took over from their father in 1977. Their 15 hectares around the village average 30 years of age, which is rare in a region that usually replants at around 25. The name honors Pierre Moncuit, who began selling wine under his own name in 1928, and his wife Odile Moncuit-Delos, who helped on the commercial side. The family says this one is for lovers of minerality. We'd add that it's real Grand Cru Mesnil without the trophy-name markup.

"Pale gold. Complex, expansive bouquet evokes candied citrus fruits, pear nectar, beeswax and jasmine, with a bright mineral flourish adding vivacity. On the palate, vibrant orchard and citrus fruit flavors flesh out and deepen with air while maintaining vivacity. The floral quality repeats on the finish, which shows superb clarity and lift and lingering stoniness." —Josh Raynolds

"Moncuit’s non-vintage Cuvee Pierre Moncuit-Delos Blanc de Blancs Brut is typically a rich, powerful, crisp effort displaying notes of chalk dust, white peaches, subtle bees honey, brioche, and yellow plums. Medium-bodied with gorgeous as well as persistent effervescence, and a dry, fabulously pure, laser-like finish, it should be drunk over the next 3-4 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about

The Moncuit family planted vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the great Chardonnay villages of the Côte des Blancs, back in 1889, and Pierre Moncuit started making his own wine in 1928. His daughter Nicole ran the cellar from 1977, and her daughter Valérie took the reins in 2007. Home turf is all Chardonnay on chalk. The flagship Delos Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru comes as Brut and Extra Brut, while the old-vine Cuvée Nicole is made only in exceptional vintages.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs profile: lemon, green apple and white flowers over chalky, saline minerality, with a hint of brioche from time on the lees. With so little dosage and no oak, it typically drinks taut and bone-dry, with fine bubbles, bright acidity rounded by malolactic, and a long, clean finish. Think Chablis with bubbles.
