Pierre Moncuit Champagne Grand Cru Rosé Brut Henriette NV

Pierre Moncuit breaks exactly one of its own rules, and this is the bottle. The family never blends wines from different villages, except for this rosé. The Chardonnay is Grand Cru, from their vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, which average more than 40 years old and grow on the village's famous chalk. The Pinot Noir is still wine from Grand Cru vineyards, so think of it as a Mesnil wine first, with the Pinot adding the colour. Otherwise it's made the Moncuit way: the grapes are picked by hand and all come from a single harvest despite the NV label, with no reserve wines. It goes through full malolactic fermentation in stainless steel (there isn't a barrel in the winery) and spends up to three years on its lees before release. It's named in honour of Henriette Moncuit. Grand Cru fruit on both sides of the blend from a grower family that has farmed Le Mesnil since 1889 is a rare thing in rosé Champagne, and a real find.

More about

The Moncuit family planted vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the great Chardonnay villages of the Côte des Blancs, back in 1889, and Pierre Moncuit started making his own wine in 1928. His daughter Nicole ran the cellar from 1977, and her daughter Valérie took the reins in 2007. Home turf is all Chardonnay on chalk. The flagship Delos Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru comes as Brut and Extra Brut, while the old-vine Cuvée Nicole is made only in exceptional vintages.
