Located just a few miles from the jaw droppingly beautiful Byzantine town of the same name, Monemvasia Winery founded in 1997 by chemist Yiorgos Tsimbidi and his wife Elli. Legend has it that the town was the birthplace of the ubiquitous Malvasia variety found all over the Mediterranean. As one would expect Yiorgos and Co grow many white varieties but they have made their name with their elegantly rustic reds.
When they established their winery Yiorgos and Elli were not looking to make wines similar to what was being produced at the time by their new neighbors. They did extensive research on what had been historically grown in the southeastern corner of this ancient peninsula. Of the many varieties that they planted, they chose two ancient varieties of red grapes to work with; Agiorgitiko and Mavroudi.
