De Wetshof Robertson Chardonnay Lesca 2024

Barrel-fermented Chardonnay from the estate that pioneered the grape in South Africa, carrying the name of the woman who kept the place running. Lesca de Wet qualified as a lawyer, then married Danie de Wet and took over De Wetshof's marketing and finance. At home the wine is sold as Finesse, but for export it bears her name. The vines grow on calcareous soils full of rock and clay in the Robertson Valley. That's a dry stretch of the Breede River region, where a southerly breeze cools the vineyards through summer. The family ferments the wine in French oak barrels. The aim is texture and a little spice, not a big oaky Chardonnay. Johann de Wet, who runs the estate with his brother Peter and their father, sums up the family's priorities bluntly: "We make Chardonnay, and the rest is a floral arrangement." If you love barrel-fermented white Burgundy and want to try something a little different, this is a smart bottle to pick up.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Chardonnay Lesca is barrel fermented and matured in 10% new oak for several months. It has a light nose that does not quite get both hands on the variety, as I would have liked. The palate is better, with tropical tones on the entry, peach melba and apricot, counterbalanced by the line of acidity. I can see how the finish has consumer-friendly accessibility and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Fine, but I preferred the 2022." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The De Wetshof Estate 2024 Robertson Lesca Chardonnay follows along in a very precise and linear fashion. It offers fresh citrus, stone fruit and elegant mineral tones of crushed rock. It's medium-bodied in texture but also very fresh and bright and drinks beautifully straight out of the gate. This is a production of 50,000 bottles." —Monica Larner

Decanter

"Chalky pink grapefruit rind and greengage weave through oyster shell and smoky, flinty reduction, flowing into creamy nuttiness and citrus-zest tail."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Fettuccine with cream and wild mushrooms; lemon-and-thyme roast or grilled chicken; seared scallops in brown butter; crab cakes or lobster rolls; young Brie or a soft goat's-milk cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect a restrained, barrel-fermented Chardonnay: citrus and orchard fruit with a touch of spice and a nutty note on the mid-palate. The oak typically brings a rounded, medium-bodied texture rather than heavy vanilla, balanced by bright acidity and a dry, lingering finish. Think white Burgundy rather than a big, buttery New World Chardonnay.
