De Wetshof Robertson Limestone Hill Chardonnay 2024

$2599

Unwooded Chardonnay from a farm where the limestone came from termites: millions of years ago their colonies built nests across the Robertson Valley, and the calcified remains left these soils unusually rich in lime — exactly what Chardonnay wants. De Wetshof is South Africa's Chardonnay house. Danie de Wet, trained at Geisenheim, did more than anyone to establish the grape in the country, and roughly 80% of the estate is still planted to it, now run by his sons Johann and Peter. Limestone Hill is the unoaked bottling: no barrel at any stage, just fruit and soil with nothing sitting on top. It is the clearest, most direct wine the estate makes, and a genuinely useful everyday white.

Robert Parker

"Under screw cap, the De Wetshof Estate 2024 Robertson Limestone Hill Chardonnay offers a simple delivery of citrus, pomelo and wild sage. The wine focuses on brightness and is extremely drinkable, but perhaps it's a little less complex compared to all the other very different Chardonnays in this portfolio. You get a pretty note of latex or natural rubber, which I really like. This wine is unoaked, and that's what sets it apart. Production is an ample 300,000 bottles." —Monica Larner

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled trout or sea bass, crab cakes, roast chicken with lemon, or a goat cheese and green bean salad.

Tasting Profile

Green apple, citrus and a nutty, leesy note. Light to medium-bodied and dry, with fresh acidity, a chalky texture, and no oak influence at all.
