Roulot is one of the few domaines whose wines sell out before they're even bottled, and this village Meursault is the easiest way into that cellar. Most of the fruit comes from Clos de la Baronne, just east of Les Gouttes d'Or. The rest comes from vines on the heavier clay soils of the commune's southern plots: Les Vireuils, Les Gruyaches, Les Crotots and Les Sous la Velle. Jean-Marc Roulot took over the family estate in 1989 and moved it to organic farming in the early 1990s, with no herbicides and ploughing only, and the farming is now certified. In the cellar he's wary of stirring the lees, a common way to build richness in Meursault, because he believes it costs a wine its purity and makes it heavy. He stirs no more than six times, only in high-acid years, and never after the malolactic fermentation. That's the house in a nutshell: Meursault built on freshness rather than butter. Roulot makes his village wine to be generous, sappy and persistent, and to drink well right away, so you get cult Meursault without years in the cellar.

More about

The name Roulot is now a synonym for the very best wine that the village of Meursault can offer. It is rather remarkable when you consider that just 2 generations back the Roulot's were known as producers of Burgundian brandy and eau de vie. But Guy Roulot began leveraging the family's distilling success to purchase small plots of vines in Meursault and by the 1970's was known as a pioneer for producing top quality chardonnay from distinct parcels or ""lieu-dits"".

When Guy passed away unexpectedly in the early '80's his son Jean-Marc was pursuing acting in Paris. In 1989 he returned to take on the reigns of the small Domaine and in the following decades built on his father's success so well that the wines are now extremely hard to acquire and to afford for most of us.

Tasting Profile

Expect Meursault in Roulot's fresh, precise house style: citrus, white peach and a hint of hazelnut, with a sappy, mineral edge rather than butter. It's typically medium-bodied and generous but taut, with bright acidity carrying a long, persistent, dry finish. Think classic Meursault texture with some of the cut of a fine Chablis, and it's ready to enjoy young.
