Pilcrow makes Cabernet Sauvignon from three distinct Mountain sites throughout the Napa Valley which celebrate an old-school wine style made famous by legends like Nathan Fay, Lee Stewart, and Bob Travers. Wines that are high-toned, unadulterated, and celebrate character (and characters). Founded in 2014 by Sara and Jonah Beer it is their love letter to the Napa Valley circa 1960.
Both Sara and Jonah are Napa Valley industry veterans. Prior to founding Pilcrow, Sara spent 13 years at Duckhorn Wine Company overseeing their wholesale markets. And in 2016 she founded True North Wine Merchant, which focuses on importing and distributing premium wines from select wineries in Willamette Valley, Columbia Gorge, Burgundy, Piedmont and the Napa Valley. Her palette is exceptional and many of the wines she imports have a home on our shelves.
Jonah was born in Indiana but has lived in the Napa Valley since 1998. His first job was working for Warren Winiarski at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars washing dishes in the tasting room. He did not stay in that position for long. Eventually he became their Director of Sales. He was with Frog’s Leap Winery from 2003 until 2021; at the end of his time with Frog’s Leap he was their Vice President.
So with all of the knowledge they had acquired working with some of the Valley's best winemakers and from years of drinking wines form their cellar they set out to make Cabernet that harkens back to the Golden Age of Napa. Lots of folks make this claim, so much so that it has become a bit cliché, but when it comes to Pilcrow they are perhaps the one who have come closest to that ideal.
The wines of Pilcrow are filigreed and restrained when they need to be while retaining the concentration and complexity that Napa made its name on. Each wine is beautifully structured and most importantly are highly representative of the appellation and vineyard they come from. While by no stretch of the imagination inexpensive, considering the quality of the raw material, as well as what is in the bottle, these wines retain an inherent value. A perfect gift for those who love Napa as well as those who have sworn it off. They are ideal for your holiday table but like any wine of this caliber, a decade in the clear will help to coax out more of its magic.
