Of the major Barolo villages, it's Monforte d'Alba that seems to be generating the most excitement these days in terms of Barolo artisanship on a micro scale. Silvano Bolmida is the latest example: a tiny producer working obsessively, both in the vineyard (where the work is all organic) and in the winery, where extended macerations and long aging in both barrel and bottle are the norm. Not much wine is produced, and hardly any of it comes to the U.S.
