Trapl founded his winery back in 2003 at the tender age of 25. The place he chose was his home in Spitzerberg, located in Austria's wine growing region of Carnuntum. At that time Carnuntum was known for producing big boozy reds destined for export and about as fun to drink as they sound. In the beginning, it was a tiny operation with Johannes supplementing the winery income with work at the neighboring Muhr-van der Niepoort where he worked alongside Dorli Muhr.
Johannes began converting his small vineyard holdings to organic viticulture and has been certified since 2006. He began applying biodynamic principles early on and has only continued to move in that direction. Conscientious canopy management and working with green cover allows grapes to ripen more gradually and develop more aromatic intensity. This has allowed for riper grapes at lower sugar levels creating wines that are fresh, vibrant, and elegant.
The terroir in this little corner of Carnuntum only contributes to these qualities. Spitzerberg is a small extension of the Little Carpathians. The limestone and schist soils can produce wines with extraordinary elegance and minerality. Hot summers and cold winters and their proximity to the moderating effects of the Danube River and Lake Neusiedl allow red grapes to ripen perfectly.
