Josef Umathum is a top winemaker in Austria’s Burgenland region who is known as a champion of the local varieties, especially Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt. He was also an early proponent of biodynamic viticulture and has converted all 60 hectares of the estate to said practices.
Josef is such a meticulous farmer and steward that he keeps a “library” of the various clonal varieties he farms in a small plot behind the winery. He also does things differently in the cellar than most of his neighbors, which includes adding stems back into the fermentation tanks for his red wines.
