On the remote island of La Palma, the northwesternmost link in that volcanic chain, Victoria Torres Pecis crafts excellent wines, from indigenous varieties, at her family's 100+ year old estate (formerly known as Matias y Torres). Her work is entirely manual, and the farming is organic. She has sourced and converted many old vineyards from her neighbors, who find the backbreaking work in the nutrient-poor soil too exhausting. The resulting wines are wildly aromatic, with a unique, savory quality that can only come from volcanic terroir, these wines are fascinating and complex.
