It’s hard to believe that Yann Bertrand is no longer the new kid on the Beaujolais block. It feels like just yesterday that we were experiencing our first tastes of his stunningly fresh, juicy, intricate wines and marveling at the undeniable talent of the young Foillard and Métras protégé. Over the years, Yann’s wines have found more poise, confidence and clarity and today they are among the most sought after in the region.
Based in Fleurie, Yann farms a collection of top sites with plenty of old vines. He’s dedicated to natural viticulture and keeping things simple and clean in the cellar. The wines are 100% whole cluster, vinified in large concrete vats and aged in concrete or older barrel depending on the parcel and character of the vintage. They occasionally see a touch of sulfur at bottling, but for the most part, these are zero zero wines that are articulate, serious, and seriously delicious with an effusive, uncompressed energy that keeps you coming back for more.
Recently, Yann has grown his portfolio of vineyards, started to purchase a little bit of fruit from other like minded growers and has even expanded his reach beyond the borders of Beaujolais releasing a loving riff on Tavel with fruit sourced with the help of none other than Thibault Pfifferling.
