Agrapart & Fils Champagne Terroirs Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru NV ['18 Base]

Terroirs is the way into Agrapart, one of the Côte des Blancs' great grower houses. It's all Grand Cru Chardonnay, made from the first and finest pressings from Avize, Oger, Cramant and Oiry. Pascal Agrapart, the fourth generation of his family in Avize, runs the estate. In Avize that means vines rooted in chalky limestone "mother rock" covered with varying amounts of clay. The Agrapart family are true growers: they buy no grapes, they farm about 12 hectares organically, and some of their vines are over 60 years old, among the oldest in the Côte des Blancs. This release is built on the 2018 harvest. The house blends two vintages for Terroirs, keeps dosage to 5 grams per litre at most and disgorges just two months before release, so it reaches you fresh. Polaner, who import it, half-jokingly call it a "poor man's Clos du Mesnil." The joke works because this is serious Blanc de Blancs and an accessible way into the estate.

More about

Strong and soft spoken, Pascal Agrapart has been working like this since 1984, well before today’s grower Champagne boom. Peter Liem compares his reputation for outstanding Côtes des Blancs wines to that of Anselme Selosse. Farming is intended to sync with natural cycles, and only indigenous yeast is used, capitalizing again on each plot’s unique terroir.

The house is based in Avize, in the Côtes des Blancs, and unsurprisingly focuses on Chardonnay. Agrapart creates terroir-driven and focused wines of great minerality and complexity, from plots chosen specifically for each cuvée. The farming is intuitive and meticulous; the work in the cellar is equally painstaking.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters with mignonette; gougères; sole meunière; sushi and sashimi, especially scallop and yellowtail; lobster rolls; a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Côte des Blancs Blanc de Blancs profile: lemon, green apple and white flowers, with a hint of brioche and a pronounced chalky minerality. The low Extra Brut dosage typically keeps it bone-dry and taut, with fine, persistent bubbles and bright, cutting acidity, finishing long, saline and clean.
