Trout Gulch is one of the Santa Cruz Mountains' most coveted Chardonnay sites, and Alfaro farmed it for more than fifteen years before finally buying it outright in 2021. The vineyard was planted back in 1980 in a coastal canyon near Aptos, roughly 750 feet up and less than four miles from Monterey Bay, on fine sandy loam that drains hard and keeps the crop honest. Fog and marine air stretch the season so long that picking here often runs into mid-October, which is why the wines come out taut and saline rather than broad. Richard and Mary Kay Alfaro traded an artisan bread business for an old apple farm in Corralitos in 1997; their son Ryan now makes the wines with a deliberately light hand. This is coastal California Chardonnay built on acidity and salt rather than oak, and it is very much Flatiron SF's backyard.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Alfaro Family Vineyards is run by husband and wife team Richard Alfaro and Mary Kay. They farm 65 acres of vines at their estate in Corralitos, located within the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation. Currently in production is Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah and Gruner Veltliner.

Dungeness crab, grilled halibut, oysters on the half shell, or a roast chicken with lemon and herbs.

Tasting Profile

Lemon peel, green apple and white flowers, with a faint nutty depth underneath. Medium-bodied and dry, with bright acidity and a distinctly saline, mineral edge. The finish is long and clean rather than creamy.
