Gruner Veltliner is barely planted in California, which makes this tiny Santa Cruz Mountains block one of the more genuinely unusual whites on the West Coast. It comes off La Playita, the coolest corner of the Alfaro farm in Corralitos and the source of all their Gruner: a small south-facing slope planted in 2008, named 'little beach' for its sandy loam soil, sitting less than four miles from the fog machine of Monterey Bay. The fruit is whole-cluster pressed and fermented slowly with native yeasts at cellar temperature, then rested in neutral barrels and stainless so nothing gets between you and the grape's peppery citrus snap. Richard and Mary Kay Alfaro sold an artisan bread business in 1997 to buy an old apple orchard here; son Ryan now runs the cellar with a deliberately non-interventionist touch. A local curiosity that also happens to be a terrific weeknight white.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Alfaro Family Vineyards is run by husband and wife team Richard Alfaro and Mary Kay. They farm 65 acres of vines at their estate in Corralitos, located within the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation. Currently in production is Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah and Gruner Veltliner.

Perfect Pairings

Schnitzel or fried chicken, asparagus and spring vegetables, Vietnamese herb salads, or fish tacos with plenty of lime.

Tasting Profile

Lime, green apple and a clear lift of white pepper on the nose. Dry and light- to medium-bodied, with crisp acidity and a lightly waxy texture from time on the lees. Finishes clean and peppery.
