The house likes to say that a cocktail cabinet without Angostura is like a kitchen without salt and pepper, and it's hard to argue. A few drops add complexity, bring out the other ingredients, and smooth over both sharp citrus and rough spirits. It began in 1824 as a stomach remedy: Dr. Johann Siegert called his formula "Amargo Aromatico", and it took its lasting name from the Venezuelan town of Angostura on the Orinoco River (now Ciudad Bolívar). By 1875 his sons had moved the business to Port of Spain, Trinidad, and almost two centuries on the recipe is still a closely kept secret. You'll spot it by the oversized label and the yellow cap, and this 4oz bottle will get you through a lot of Pink Gins and Mai Tais.
